Bethune had no patience with people whom he thought pompous or stupid. He used to take pleasure in deliberately annoying them. Once, at a dinner party given by a wealthy Montrealer, Bethune tried to cause trouble by suggesting that people should never wash, in order to allow their natural smell to come through. It was a joke, since Bethune himself was always very clean and tidy. But some people thought he was serious and were very offended.

Although he could be angry and annoying to people he thought silly, he was extremely generous to his friends. All his books had plates in them stating that this book was the property of Norman Bethune and his friends. On one occasion, someone complimented him on the woollen overcoat he was wearing. Bethune immediately removed the coat and gave it to the person as a gift.
